Bring your insurance card(s).
Bring any reports from your primary care doctor.
Bring any x-rays.
Prepare a list of medications you are currently taking.
Prepare a list of questions for the doctor.
Avoid clothing with zippers, and wear loose clothing like sweatpants so the doctor can easily examine you.

Preparing your body for surgery
Stop smoking.
Have any gum or dental problems treated before surgery to reduce the risk of infection.
Lose weight, if you’re overweight.
If taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, consult your doctor, he or she may want you to stop 2 weeks before surgery to minimize bleeding.
Eat a well balanced diet, supplemented with iron and a multivitamin.
Report any surgery, as surgery cannot be performed if present.

What to bring to hospital for surgery
Bring a list of medications.
Bring your insurance and/or Medicare card.
The telephone numbers of relatives or designated help person.
Bring walking shoes, loose clothes and underwear.
Personal care items; toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.
Books or radio headset.
Cash for miscellaneous items.
Keep valuables and large sums of money at home.

Preparing your home for after surgery
Arrange for help now. You will need someone who can drive you to your follow-up appointments and help with running errands.
Make arrangements for someone to care of your pets and mail.
Reorganize your home. Remove loose scattered rugs and extension cords, and clutter that may be a hazard.
Set up a recovery station with a cordless phone, medications and everyday essentials.
Have convenience foods ready, or make and freeze casseroles that can be later warmed up.
Secure handrails along your staircase.
A temporary living space on the same floor, because walking up or down stairs will be more difficult during early recovery.
It may be helpful to have the following items on hand as well:
A stable shower bench or chair for bathing.
A toilet seat riser with arms, if you have a low toilet.
Safety bars or a secure handrail in your shower or bath.
