SUPPLEMENTS BEFORE SURGERY!

If you’re having surgery and taking supplements you might want to stop them before your procedure. * Ginkgo biloba, an herb used to boost memory may cause dangerous bleeding during surgery. * Ginseng is taken to improve the immune system may affect sugar levels. * Valerian root is often taken for sleep disorders can make anesthesia dangerous.
I recommend stoping all these supplements as soon as you know you are having surgery and inform your physician and anesthesiologist if you have been taking any of these supplements. Ron #hipandkneedoc #tulsa #supplements #surgery

IS IT MY BACK OR HIP CAUSING ME PAIN?

images-5

Oh, my aching back, or is it my hip? Back problems can often masquerade as hip problems and most pain from hip and back problems is due to ordinary wear and tear on the body.

When the hip is the usual suspect you may experience:

~ Pain is in your groin
~ Discomfort comes and goes, becoming more frequent over time
Pain worsens with standing, walking and activity, and is relieved by rest.
~ You feel stiff
~ You walk with a limp
~ Avascular necrosis, or AVN, is a serious condition marked by death of hip bone at the joint. The pain is usually worse and far more constant than in osteoarthritis.

When the spine is the likely culprit:

Most lower spine problems are caused by a herniated disc that presses on nerves in the spinal column. This produces the pain known as sciatica, which can be felt in the hip. You may have a herniated disc if pain:

~ Is limited to your back, buttocks or hip.
~ Shoots down your leg
~ Worsens with sitting or bending
~ Improves when standing or walking

If you have any of the above symptoms and would like to make a consultation you can request and appointment online at www.hipandkneedoc.com or send me a private message with your contact information and my staff will give you a call!

DON’T USE THE INTERNET FOR PHYSICIAN REFERRALS!

When looking for a trusted medical professional ask for referrals from your friends, family and other medical professions. One of the worst places to find a physician is on sites like Healthgrades, Vitals and RateMD.

These sites do not verify if the information is accurate and quite often the reviews may be fake. If you see a negative review it’s usually from an anonymous person who wants to bash the doctor and unfortunately the physician has no recourse.

If you need a referral please send me a private message and I will give you names of physicians I would trust with my family. I also have 15 partners so if you need something other than your hip or knee treated, I can help you as well.

Feel free to ask questions or leave me a comment.

TRAMPOLINE DANGERS!

11182038_960881970609575_673427237478669168_n-1

Consider this my annual rant about how much I dislike trampolines.

When we bought our house almost 7 years ago it came with an in-ground trampoline surrounded with a brick border. The hole was a good 10 feet deep and the trampoline was at least 12 feet in diameter so it was pretty big. My daughter was 2 years old at the time and before we moved in I had it removed and the hole filled.

I know kids love them but they can cause serious head and neck injuries and some accidents can be fatal. If you have a trampoline only allow one child on at a time and never leave them unattended. I have also treated several adults with very serious injuries from jumping on the trampoline. Take my advice and stay off them!

In my opinion it’s simply not worth the risk.

SURGERY IS NOT ALWAYS THE ANSWER!

11188288_966246010073171_3949540053004600420_n

Here’s a story I thought you would enjoy about an old lady with an arthritic knee. A few weeks ago our sweet Lucy (my favorite pooch) injured her knee. She will be 12 years old next month and pretty much a senior citizen but in good health.

Our vet determined she did not tear her ACL and does not require surgery. Three years ago almost to the day she tore her other ACL and required major surgery and quite honestly we didn’t think she was going to make it. The poor girl ended up at the vet for a month because the pain medication made her so sick she developed stomach ulcers.

To keep her comfortable my wife decided along with our vets to take a holistic approach. This includes a daily cocktail of supplements for her joints, weekly injections, shock wave therapy on her knee, weekly adjustments by a chiropractor and next week she starts water therapy.

Her pain seems to be controlled for the most part, she’s happy and otherwise doing well. The point of the story is surgery is not always the answer.

I understand for most people making a decision to have surgery is not an easy one. Don’t be afraid to discuss your concerns with me and it’s okay to make a second appointment to revisit your options!

Questions or comments? I would love to hear from you!

Ron

PS: When Robin and I were ring shopping she announced to the jeweler she didn’t want a ring, she wanted another dog. I assured the jeweler she would be getting an engagement ring and not an engagement puppy. I finally caved and gave her Lucy for our second year anniversary present!
